The Relative Stability of Planktic Foraminifer Thermal Preferences over the Past 3 Million Years

چکیده

Stationarity of species’ ecological tolerances is a first-order assumption paleoenvironmental reconstruction based upon analog methods. To test this and other assumptions used in quantitative analysis foraminiferal faunas for paleoceanographic reconstruction, we analyzed paired alkenone unsaturation ratio (U37K′) sea surface temperature (SST) estimates relative abundances planktic foraminifera within Late Pliocene assemblages. We established preferences nine species the North Atlantic: Dentoglobigerina altispira, Globorotalia menardii, Globoconella puncticulata, Neogloboquadrina atlantica, incompta, pachyderma, Trilobatus sacculifer, Globigerinita glutinata, Globigerina bulloides. compared these to same extant species, three cases where are now extinct (Dentoglobigerina puncticulata), comparisons were made either descendant or modern commonly as analogs. In general, taxa tested show similar responses both present-day (core-top) distributions. The data from mostly encouraging, supporting past conclusions, otherwise valuable testing previous taxonomic grouping decisions that often necessary interpreting paleoenvironment

Evolution of carbon cycle over the past 100 million years

It is generally accepted that progressive cooling of global climate since the Late Cretaceous results from decreasing partial pressure of atmospheric CO2 (pCO2). However, details on how and why the carbon cycle evolved and how it would affect pCO2 have not been fully resolved. While the long-term decline of pCO2 might be caused by the decrease of volcanic degassing through the negative feedback...

paleomagnetism of damavand volcano over the last half million years

damavand volcano with 5671 m height from sea level which covers 400 square km of area is the highest peak in the middle east. it is located at 50 km to the east of capital city of tehran, iran. it is in the fumarolic stage and exemplifies ongoing quaternary volcanic activity. damavan volcano was influenced by regional tectonics during its history. allenbach (1966) believed that the volcano orig...

The Basal Ganglia Over 500 Million Years

The lamprey belongs to the phylogenetically oldest group of vertebrates that diverged from the mammalian evolutionary line 560 million years ago. A comparison between the lamprey and mammalian basal ganglia establishes a detailed similarity regarding its input from cortex/pallium and thalamus, as well as its intrinsic organisation and projections of the output nuclei. This means that the basal ...

Oxygen isotope constraints on the sulfur cycle over the past 10 million years.

Oxygen isotopes in marine sulfate (delta18O(SO4)) measured in marine barite show variability over the past 10 million years, including a 5 per mil decrease during the Plio-Pleistocene, with near-constant values during the Miocene that are slightly enriched over the modern ocean. A numerical model suggests that sea level fluctuations during Plio-Pleistocene glacial cycles affected the sulfur cyc...

Methane and the Ch4–related Greenhouse Effect over the past 400 Million Years

Natural variations in the tropospheric CH4 concentration, excluding short bursts from geospheric reservoirs, have been estimated for the past 400 Ma by scaling a wetland CH4 emission estimate for the middle Pliocene (ca. 3.6–2.6 Ma) by the relative rate of coal basin deposition at any given time in the past. Wetland CH4 fluxes were used as inputs into the Cambridge 2-D chemistry-transport model...
